1 Traffic signalling system on the A35 State Highway between the Azelo junction and the Buren junction.

Peek, working together with Dutch Ministry of Public Works, has built a traffic signalling system on the A35 State Highway between the Azelo junction and the Buren junction, which uses a new innovative roadside station, LED signallers and radar detectors.

The traffic signalling system measures the traffic flows via radar detectors and uses this to inform the road user about the current traffic situation via graphs on LED signallers above the road. Use of universal products, based on high quality technology and open network standards, gives an innovative dynamic traffic system, which is part of the national traffic signalling system.

The use of these innovative building blocks has the following advantages:

• Lower energy consumption;
• Fewer boxes along the road;
• Fewer cables due to the use of pipe technologiesLower maintenance frequency;
• Fewer disturbances for the road user;
• More environment friendly.

The new dynamic traffic system, jointly because of the innovative character, has been subjected to intensive testing by Peek and the certifying bodies. There was then an exhaustive practical test, in which the system functioned fully, however with a low light intensity of the signallers so that the displayed information was not observed by the road users.
