Peek traffic solutions

1 The TrafficBox is a universal roadside platform on which various traffic functions have been implemented.

2 The Outstation Cabinet comprises 3 equal compartments with space for 19" racks for the equipment. The GEB section is located behind the lefthand door with the UPS and in the centre section is the heart of the substation, the "TrafficBox". The right-hand compartment is completely for the connection of the peripherals. The housing is constructed of stainless steel and is sprayed in the colour RAL 7032.

The Outstation (OS)

The Outstation is one of the most important components of the Motorway Traffic Management (MTM) system for the Rijkswaterstaat, part of the Dutch Ministry of Transport. The OS, also called the MTM outstation, is a modular build roadside system.

Functions

The core functions of the OS are detection of traffic behavior and alerting motorists in case of incidents via images on the signal signs above or along the road. The OS therefore communicates with at least one central system. The traffic behavior is retrieved from the traffic data gathered from the sensors in the road surface connected to the OS. The images for the signal signs are either commanded from the central system of calculated by the OS based on the traffic data received. From the central system also images can be commanded for lane closures, roadwork, etc.

Architecture

The building blocks of this product can be configured for almost all situations required in interurban traffic management. Future hardware, software or network extensions can be embedded easily in the design.

A MTM-OS consists of a number of system components. The central part of the OS is the TrafficBox. These are both individual and in a basic configuration available. Depending on the required functionality within the system a number components will be added to the basic configuration.

These additions are depending on the:

  • number of matrix signs;
  • number of detection loops;
  • number of connected outstations on a party line;
  • number of external detector stations;
  • usage of a feed through facility for the power cable.
