Some adaptive urban traffic control systems can take into account the number of stops by vehicles. The latter can be used to limit fuel inefficient accelerations. The impact of a stop of a fully laden truck is much higher than that of a light weight private car. By using the emerging cooperative systems technology it will become possible to minimise fuel consumption based on actual vehicle characteristics. The cooperative interaction is twofold. Firstly, the urban traffic control system gets real-time insight in the vehicle characteristics through which control can be optimised. Secondly, the urban traffic control system can give feedback on optimal acceleration patterns to individual drivers or vehicles. <download>15th World Congress on Intelligent Transport Systems, New York Vulnerable road user protection at intelligent intersectionStatistics show that about forty percent of all road accidents occur at urban and rural intersections, mainly due to misjudgement and rule violation. Collisions involving vulnerable road users often lead to serious or even fatal injuries. The Intelligent Cooperative Intersection Safety system (IRIS), as part of the European research project SAFESPOT, is a roadside application that aims at decreasing the number of accidents at controlled intersections. The application uses vehicle-to-infrastructure communication to track and analyze the movements of individual vehicles and explicitly addresses the protection of vulnerable road users. Key elements of IRIS are the real-time identification of dangerous situations and the application of appropriate measures to prevent collisions. This paper analyses the safety of vulnerable road users at controlled intersections within the context of the SAFESPOT-IRIS system. <download>15th World Congress on Intelligent Transport Systems, New York Intelligent Cooperative Intersection Safety system (IRIS) – a SAFESPOT applicationAlmost all traffic accidents at urban and rural intersections occur due to misjudgment of the situation or rule violation. The Intelligent Cooperative Intersection Safety System (IRIS), as part of the European research project SAFESPOT, is a roadside application that aims at decreasing the number of accidents at controlled intersections. The application uses vehicleto- infrastructure communication and extended roadside sensing to track and analyze the movements of individual road users. A key element of IRIS is the real-time identification of dangerous situations and the generation or selection of appropriate measures to prevent collisions. This paper presents the IRIS application and its necessary system environment (e.g. data fusion). Additionally, an outlook on validation and demonstration activities is given. The Flexible Bus Lane application, as part of the European research project CVIS, is a cooperative application that aims at using bus lanes more efficiently. New cooperative technology, in particular vehicle-to-infrastructure communication, enables specific vehicles to enter a bus lane through a negotiation process that increases the overall efficiency of the infrastructure while ensuring an undisturbed passage of public transport vehicles. This paperpresents the concept of the Flexible Bus Lane application and an analysis of its potential by means of the Bologna test site implementation <download> 7th European Congress and Exhibition on Intelligent Transport Systems and Services, Geneva Driving simulator study for Intelligent Cooperative Intersection Safety systemAbout forty percent of all accidents occur at intersections. The Intelligent Cooperative Intersection Safety system (IRIS), as part of the European research project SAFESPOT, is a roadside application and aims at minimizing the number of accidents at controlled and uncontrolled intersections. IRIS uses vehicle-to-infrastructure communication to track and analyze the movements of all individual vehicles. A key element of IRIS is to identify dangerous situations in time and take the appropriate measure to prevent collisions. This paper presents the concept of IRIS, points out the complexity of intersections and addresses the usefulness and results of a driving simulator study <download>.7th European Congress and Exhibition on Intelligent Transport Systems and Services, Geneva Cooperative InfrastructureGenerally, vehicles arriving at a controlled intersection all get the same treatment, and often that means they have to stop, wait and accelerate again. When a heavy loaded truck arrives and stops this means loss of green time, extra delay for the vehicles behind the truck and additional emissions, noise and damage to the road surface. Authorities are not only challenged by ever increasing traffic volumes, but also by more stringent environmental targets. One of the aims of the European Commission sponsored research project CVIS (Cooperative Vehicle Infrastructure Systems) is to improve traffic efficiency by means of vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to infrastructure communication. This paper presents the CVIS technology and a real-life example of its application: the Priority Application. This application can grant priority to specific vehicle types and inform drivers about the expected green intervals. In comparison to the state-of-the-art technology, especially heavy trucks benefit as the Priority Application allows the driver to anticipate an upcoming green light without the need to stop. At the same time this will lower emissions and noise at the intersection. <download>IEEE Intelligent Vehicles, Eindhoven Intelligent Kruispunt beschermt langzaam verkeer (Dutch)Deze presentatie laat de mogelijkheden zien om langzaam verkeer te beschermen. <download> |
